swissrelief.ch

How it's made

Designed, printed, and shipped from Switzerland.

swissrelief.ch is a small Swiss company that makes every relief itself — in our own workshop in eastern Switzerland, on our own multicolor printers, with no outsourcing and no overseas factories.

A small Swiss workshop

We are a small operation based in eastern Switzerland. There is no factory, no overseas warehouse, and no middleman — just a workbench, a row of printers, and the people who set up, monitor, and finish each piece by hand.

We offer two ways to buy: a curated catalog of ready-to-order classics like the Matterhorn or Mont Blanc, and fully custom reliefs of any place on earth, configured in our designer. Either way, the print itself happens in our workshop after you order — nothing sits on a shelf waiting to be sold.

From map to mantelpiece

Each relief goes through the same five steps in our workshop.

  1. 1 · Terrain data

We pull elevation data for the chosen region from public sources, clean it up, and convert the heightfield into a layered 3D model with crisp contour bands.

  2. 2 · Color planning

Routes, borders, place markers and the surface palette are baked into the file as separate filaments, so the printer knows exactly which color belongs on which layer.

  3. 3 · Multicolor printing

The model prints on a multi-material FDM printer that swaps filament between layers. A small relief takes a few hours; large ones run overnight under our supervision.

  4. 4 · Hand finishing

After the print finishes we remove supports, clean the edges, and inspect every piece for layer adhesion, color accuracy and surface finish. Anything that doesn't pass gets reprinted.

  5. 5 · Packed and shipped

Each relief is wrapped, boxed, and dropped off at our local Swiss post office — usually within a few business days of the order.

Materials we print with

We print with PLA — a plant-based, low-odor thermoplastic — in a curated palette of colors chosen for terrain, water, routes, and borders. The result is rigid, light, and stable indoors at normal room conditions.

Why we do it this way

  • Local production

Producing in Switzerland keeps shipping short, supports local suppliers, and means you can actually reach the people who made your relief.

  • Made to order

Nothing is mass-produced. Each piece is printed for one customer, in the size, place, and color choices they picked.

  • Small team, direct contact

You won't talk to a call center. Questions, custom requests, and follow-ups go straight to the same people who run the printers.
